Skating Pond in Jonesport, Maine
Skating Pond
The skating pond—also known as the duck pond—is located on the Scenic Byway (Route 187) in downtown Jonesport.
Once a pasture, this town-owned property was purchased for $300 in March 1965. Some ledge was removed to enlarge the area. Today, the land includes a pond and provides habitat for local wildlife, including ducks, herons, frogs, moose, coyotes, and bobcats. When it’s not being used for skating, the pond may be used by the Fire Department for emergency situations.
A small bridge allows visitors to walk alongside the pond, and chairs, a bench, and picnic tables are placed at various spots along the shoreline for public use. In winter, the town maintains the pond as a seasonal skating area, complete with lighting and a warming hut.
