Standing 23 feet tall in Addison Point Park, the buoy tree is a community memorial to Maine fishermen and their way of life.
The Addison Days Committee collected more than 1,000 buoys from the Maine coast to build it. The mix includes those from working fishermen, decorated contributions from local schoolchildren and organizations, and some serving as tributes to fishermen who have passed in recent years.
After his visit to Addison, January 30th, Governor Paul LePage touted the colorful creation in a Facebook post as being the largest buoy tree in the United States and the second largest in the world. The tree is expected to remain through April, so there's still time to see it.
